We might finally have a replacement for the rope and pulley elevator system which has been in existence for the past 160 years.Other than the space requirement of the system, it is inefficient and lacks flexibility with regards to design and functionality. is something better coming?
Multi-directional Elevator system
ThyssenKrupp, a German multi-national conglomerate, has launched a system that runs on rails that act as linear motors, with electromagnetic field propelling and accelerating the cabins up, down, left and right. When a cabin stops, the rails rotates so that it can move off to left or right rather continue upwards or downwards.
The system would be able to travel higher than 1600 feet which is the maximum safe height of current elevator system. This will eliminate the need for as many shafts to take people to top floors and also allow architects the flexibility they need to design buildings in different shapes or form.
The only impediment to this system is that it is three to five times more costly compared to conventional elevator systems.
