With the launch of the Kenyan Standard Gauge railway, it is imperative that their neighbours also follow suit. However, Tanzania and Uganda have gone a step further and are planning to incorporate Electrical lines into their upcoming SGR projects as opposed to the Kenyan one which runs purely on Diesel
The two East African countries will buy trains with Electric elements incorporated as they look more cost effective in the long run. However, their operations will depend on power availability.
Kenyans will not be left behind in the long term as they are planning to install Electric lines into the recently launched SGR by the year 2021. The Kenyan authorities also clarified that the sgr locomotives have upgrading capabilities.
