The government has awarded a Chinese firm, CAMC Engineering, Kshs 13.6 billion contract to construct a 285 km power line between Garrisa and Isiolo. The high voltage line once complete is expected to stabilise power supply in the two remote ares. The contract is of a two year period funded by Export-Import Bank of China.
In addition to stabilising the power supply of the region, this project also boosts plans of the Rural Electrification Authority to put a 55 MW solar power plant in the region as well as other renewable energy power plants to be put up in that region.
KETRACO plans to put additional 7, 000 km of power line within five years to cut reliance on diesel generated power supply in areas that are not covered by the national grid.
