You will be fined Kshs. four million or serve a four year jail term should you be found using or in possession of a plastic bag. Well, you have until 28th August 2017 to make use of all the plastic bags in your possession. This applies to both individual and manufacturers.

This is one of the measures being taken by the government with regards to pollution and environmental protection in which those found culpable will serve no less than one year in jail or a fine no less than Kshs. two million.
In support of these initiatives, Kenya Bureau of Standards approved alternatives to the plastic bags which are deemed environmental friendly of which are readily available in the market. The materials approved include canvas, polypropylene and clothes. In addition, KEBS will not be issuing any new licenses or permits to polythene manufacturers after 28th August 2017 when the ban on plastic bags will be in force.
Several institutions have also joined in on the Governments efforts to ensure the ban on plastic bags is a success. Village Market recently banned use and distribution of plastic bags overly a month before the ban is implemented. In addition to their ban, they also offered their customers an alternative to the plastic bags by sewing their old jeans into fashionable shopping bags. Nakumatt is also one of the retailers not encouraging use of plastic shopping bags.
