A trap is normally set to capture something, be it for hunting a down a rat or even catching a thief. So, what traps the poisonous odour in the drainage system that it never finds its way to the house? Traps, the least recognised part of the drainage system are simply fittings at the end of a waste pipe mean`t to prevent sewer gases from leaving the sewer pipes. They come in different shapes and sizes depending on the size of the drainage system and the use.

Types And Purposes Of Traps In A Drainage System
- P, Q and S -Trap - They are called so based on their shapes and are installed under the kitchen sinks and bathrooms. They are made from PVC and are used to trap debris from getting into the drains to cause unnecessary blockages and prevent sewer gases from getting into homes.
- Floor Trap - This is an easy one to see as it mounted on the surface but flush with the floor level. These are meant to capture overflowing water from the sinks, toilets, wash hand basins or showers into the drainage system.
- Gully Trap - This is installed outside the building just before the drain is connected into the manhole. They are mean to collect from the wash area, bathrooms, kitchen sinks and urinals.
- Bottle Traps - Most kitchen sinks and wash hand basins do not have their own traps thus a bottle trap is installed underneath to receive the waste and prevent o dour from getting into the house
- Grease traps - These are installed just after the kitchen sinks and are meant to trap and separate grease from waste water. These traps are very handy in that the Grease, if left to flow into the drainage system, sticks onto drainage pipes trapping objects and debris which leads to blockages.

- They should have smooth interiors for ease in self cleaning and flow is not obstructed.
- They should be accessible for cleaning and to allow for the grease to be taken away in the case of the grease trap.
- The should be made of non-absorbent materials.
Getting these traps designed and installed the right way is the only surety that you do not put your loved one and your life in danger. The Sewer gases are not only smelly but can be very explosive thus the need for the traps to block them.
