Kenya’s Power Demand Rises as Local Generation Stalls: Imports Surge to Avert Rationing

Kenya is facing growing pressure on its electricity supply after new data revealed that local power generation has remained virtually unchanged for the past three years, even as national demand continues to climb. The widening gap has forced Kenya Power to increase electricity imports to avoid large-scale rationing across the country.

According to recent energy reports, electricity demand rose steadily last year, driven by population growth, expanding industries, digital services, and new housing developments. However, local generation — largely relying on geothermal, hydro, wind and a small share of thermal plants — has failed to keep pace.

As a result, Kenya has turned increasingly to imported power from neighboring countries. Imports have grown significantly, providing much-needed support to the national grid during peak demand hours and helping the country avoid the possibility of scheduled blackouts.

Industry observers note that while imported power has helped stabilize supply in the short term, the trend signals deeper challenges in Kenya’s long-term energy planning. Stagnant generation capacity, delayed projects, and transmission constraints continue to limit the country’s ability to meet rising demand from within its own borders.

The situation has sparked renewed discussions about investment in new generation plants, faster expansion of renewable energy projects, and upgrading Kenya’s aging transmission network. Energy experts warn that unless local supply is boosted soon, Kenya may become increasingly dependent on imports, leaving the economy exposed to external shocks and fluctuating regional power availability.

For now, imported electricity is keeping the lights on — but many agree it is a temporary fix. Kenya’s growing demand will require equally ambitious growth in local generation if the country hopes to sustain economic expansion and ensure reliable power for homes, businesses, and industries in the years ahead.
