Relemech Services LTD , as part of our work, we are tasked to find ways and make sure that water is available wherever needed in right proportions and the most suitable pressure for whatever purpose our clients intend them for. The most common ways is use of water booster/transfer pumps but how do you pick or size the one best suited to your needs?
Booster Pumps |
There are several reasons why you might need to use a booster or transfer pump in your plumbing systems as listed below:
- Low county water pressure: The water pressure supplied by your services water provider might not be enough to meet your fittings pressure requirements.
- Height of your development: For every height reached by water some pressure is lost along the way. As such you might need a pump to push the water to higher heights for the appropriate pressure to be achieved. This applies as well when your building is located uphill of water supply.
- Need For water storage : When you need to store some water before us or for use in future or emergency situations then you might need to have an underground water storage facility. Once water is stored, it has to be pumped for usage to your fittings.
- Adding New Fixture: When your systems were meant to operate at a certain pressure, any additional equipment may call for anew pump to meet the pressure requirement of as many fittings or specific to the new fitting.
Sizing A Booster Pump.
Below are some of the parameters we use to come up with the correct size of a pump:
Below are some of the parameters we use to come up with the correct size of a pump:
- Calculate the Pumps flow rate: This is measured in gallons per minute or Cubic Metres Per Second. The most common method we use is the fixture unit. This is defined by various standards and thus each fitting is has their own specific fixture units. The standards have also assigned the fittings relevant fixture units factoring in on the probability that some fittings will be used at the same time.
- Get your total dynamic head: This is achieved by combining the static head and friction head. Static head is the total vertical height the water is set to rise while friction head refers to resistance of water flow along the way before it gets to its destination. The booster pumps are so designed to overcome the stated dynamic head at a given flow rate.
- How Many pumps would you need?:Having more than one pump in a system not only ensures longer lifes for your pumps but also ensures that at no point will you have both pumps broken at the same time. Your system will continue to pump water as the other one is repaired.
Other factors to put into consideration includes:
4. Budget: There are as many pumps in the market with prices apart for pumps of same specification. If you want a more efficient quite pump then you might need to spend a little bit much more compared to the noisy one.
5. Space: Do you have enough space to house your pumps? Enough space ensures your pump is not stuffed limiting its performance. It also ensures there is enough room in case of maintenance or repair.
6. Electrical provisions: Get a qualified person to determine for you the correct sizes for isolators and the necessary cabling to ensure your pump is properly provided for in terms of Electrical power. This should be at the point where your pump is going to be housed.
